Ironmonger Row is a Grade II listed Beaux arts swimming pool, public baths and Turkish Baths near Old Street in east London. Built in 1931 by public baths specialists AWS & KMB Cross , it was extended in 1938 to include Turkish Baths.
Turkish baths are closely related to ancient Greek and Roman baths: a hot steam room, a series of warm dry rooms and an icy plunge pool.
The baths closed today 21 May 2010 for two years for refurbishment and will reopen as a Spa - which sounds ominous.
It was a refuge from the world, underground and often quiet. I found it a good place for mind wandering.
